Session 5: Do

  Progress:

Find Students to Teach

Make arrangements to teach your lesson to students in Session 6. Depending on the lesson you choose, you may need to allow between 30–45 minutes. Choose the best plan for you:

  1. Plan A: Talk to your teacher or club advisor to see if your high school already has a relationship with an area elementary school. Your teacher may also have other ideas.
  2. Plan B: Put together a group of 3–4 elementary-aged children to teach outside of school. These can be children you know such as family members or neighbors.
  3. Plan C: Assemble a group of your friends or family members.

Prepare to Teach

Prepare to teach your lesson by completing the following steps:

  1. Print the lesson you want to teach.
  2. Research to brush up on the content. For example, if you want to do the Fibonacci lesson, watch several videos on YouTube. If you want to lead the dot card talk, do some research on number talks. You don’t need to be an expert, but a bit of research will make you more comfortable facilitating the lesson.
  3. Read the lesson again and imagine that you are teaching it. Are there things you want to add? Clarifications? Questions you want to ask? Or perhaps you want to try the QFT to get students asking the questions? Modifications that would work better for the students you’ll be teaching or the location you’ll be? For example, if you know you’ll have an interactive whiteboard and speakers, you might find a fun video to include. If you are teaching in a  gym, you might not want to use multimedia because of the acoustics.
  4. Add your notes in the margins of the lesson. Head’s up: Keep track of this print out with your notes—you’ll need to photograph it in Session 6.
  5. Think about the timing and roughly estimate how long each step of the lesson will take.  This will help you stay on track to finish within your scheduled time. Again, write your notes in the margin. Note: Estimating time is more of an art than a science, and teachers get better at it with experience.
  6. Gather and prepare any materials you need.
